Beaches
Virginia Beach, a major resort complete with many high-rise hotels and
condos is about 3 hours east of C’ville. Less commercial (but farther
away) are the North Carolina Outer Banks (a 100-mile plus strip of
barrier islands that is largely a development free National Seashore
south of the built up area at its north end) and Chincoteague (about 1
hr. north of VA Beach) which abuts Assateague Island, a National
Seashore on the ocean side and a National Wildlife Refuge complete
with wild horses, Sika deer and a birdwatchers’ paradise on the Sound
side.
